Toys for our Jackahuahuas and other small dogs
I have chosen toys that are well suited to our little Jackahuahuas as often they need to be a little tougher. Max can destroy some toys in seconds. As with all toys supervision is needed at all times.
I check any new toy I buy for Max-ability!
The ONLY toys he is ever left with are ones such as Kongs and the bones featured. On arrival, please do your own checks as you know the toys that will 'survive' your own Jackahuahua.
Most toys are not designed to be left with a dog on its own.
I have found that wee Max has tough terrier jaws, like most Jackahuahuas. All toys need to be chosen very carefully, look at stitching very carefully on all fabric toys. I will pull at parts that look weak and will point out any weak spots to store managers. I have found in one 'top seller' sold in most stores - independent and chains - a squeeker wrapped in a plastic bag, help on with an elastic band and a stuffing that would stop any dog breathing if swallowed. Whilst many toys carry a warning about unsupervised play, some could cause havoc in the blink of an eye. Choose your toys as carefully as you chose your dog.
I can highly recommend the Nyrabone products, go for the powerful chewers ones and they will last these born chewers a long time. Max always seems to have several on the go!
Of course, no doggie world is complete without a Kong! I choose 'Extreme' for Max as they can take the 'extra hammer'! Max has his stuffed with his
Arden Grange feeds as well as a selection of shaped dog treats. He has to work at eating his 'meals' and earning his treats. As Jackahuahuas have active brains this is a great way for him to amuse himself and makes his meals last longer and has helped stop those, hurried clearing of the bowl and look for more moments.
The Extreme Kong is one of the world’s strongest rubber dog toys and is used worldwide by police and military dogs as well as competitive trainers. This extra tough version is available only in the larger sizes. (Max has the medium size) It shares the same hollow centre as the regular Kong so that treats and snack can be inserted as a boredom breaker . I use the foam now and again as an 'extra treat'.
